What are the must-do’s? What can you live without? Prioritize
* Plan on going to the areas that most interest your child first. Read their cues for overstimulation or tiring. It is not important that they experience it ALL this year. It is an annual event and there will be many more opportunities for adventures in their little lives.
* Know your child. Dress your child in bright colors or clothing that will stand out. Wear neon! Plan your day around your child’s schedule so that he/she is in “Happy” mode during the excursion. Your child’s age will impact your choices. Visit the farm animals. Bring hand sanitizers for use following their petting adventure. Research rides and choose appropriateness based on your particular child. What some children find thrilling, another may find boring or frightening. If possible, or necessary, ride with them.
* Consider the weather and arrive early if it is going to be a sweltering day. Dress accordingly. Wear sunblock.
* Avoid meltdowns. Don’t rush, plan to go to the fair on a day when you have no other plans. Take your time!
* Bring along a wagon and/or stroller. When children get tired they can ride in them and they also are great for storing things.
* Pack well; sunblock, extra clothing, wipes, snacks, water, bandages
* Be safe: watch your children carefully, especially around rides. Small children don’t realize the dangers. With many people around children may get lost. Teach your child what to do if you become separated. A bracelet with the child’s Id is optimum. Teaching a child their full name, address and telephone number is also important.
* Don’t forget the camera. It’s the perfect Kodak moment! Have your camera charged and ready to go, preventing any disappointments.
* Make it special. Don’t go to the fair with children if you are planning to shop. When you are taking your children for their first trip to the fair, spend your time doing things they will like. Put them first!
* Remember it is a learning experience also. Children will see animals, vegetables, foods, flowers, people, hear music and overall be treated to an experience perhaps unlike anything they have seen or heard previously.

The Fair is a great place to have family fun and create lasting memories. With only a few years to share these moments together, make the most of this time together while they are young as all too soon they will be going with their own teenage friends. Enjoy!
